As part of the 'Zombis. Death is not the end? 'exhibition, the Arteum studio has created an exclusive collection based on voodoo imagery.
A vèvè is a symbol that the voodoo priests - the hougan - draw around a potomitan (post-mitan, a pillar located at the centre of the peristyle), the place where the spirits (loa or lwa) pass through, using maize flour, wheat flour, cane syrup, ash, chalk or any other powder. The vèvè can be drawn on other supports (jugs, animals) or outdoors (for example, near certain springs) for the rituals at the end of the year.
The vèvè corresponds to a lwa, and the drawing brings together its symbols. The vèvès for a lwa may vary, but they generally feature its traditional symbols in stylised form, with a strong influence from late 18th-century French ironwork.
