In this novel, Amitav Ghosh takes us on an unusual journey along the paths of India, Arabia and North Africa. Three endearing and eccentric characters fuel the colourful adventures of Alu, a gifted young weaver: the opulent madam Zindi-the-Apple, Jyoti Das, a policeman with a passion for ornithology, and above all Balaram, a phrenologist who swears by his hero Louis Pasteur and takes a great interest in the bumps that cover Alu's head.
The destinies of these bewildering heroes intersect and intertwine in a dazzling race of disasters and wonders. It's a saga of a novel that reconciles the spirit of the picaresque novel with that of modern storytelling.
